On Monday, July 19, 2021, the Office of the Governor of the State of New York, in conjunction with New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), announced that energy project developer, Ecosave Inc., is a first-round winner in the Community Heat Pump Systems Pilot Program. Ecosave, in partnership with property developer LCOR, was the sole awardee in the program’s ‘construction’ category, qualifying for $1.62 million to build the largest geothermal project in New York City’s history.

Aligning itself with the goals of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, which aims for an 85% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, NYSERDA developed the Community Heat Pump Program which awarded $4 million to 23 organizations committed to meeting this goal through the implementation of ground source (geothermal) heat pump systems.

The project, set to break ground this fall at Surf Ave/West 16th Street in Brooklyn’s famed Coney Island, will feature a community geothermal heat pump system designed to electrify and decarbonize two buildings’ heating, cooling, and domestic hot water systems, providing efficient, low carbon heating and cooling to the 470,000 SF mixed use complex. The development will be comprised of 463 residential apartments, 30% of which will be designated affordable housing.

According to Ecosave CEO, Marcelo Rouco, “the drive to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in a financially viable way begins by electrifying buildings with geothermal, which cuts energy operating expenses and carbon emissions in half. We are proud to work with LCOR, who made the right choice for our planet, future generations, and their investment.”

The Ecosave / LCOR team are charting a new course in the energy industry — one that pivots away from fossil fuels and takes a significant step forward to a decarbonized future. This project stands to serve a blueprint and proof-of-concept for many years to come, accelerating the uptake of geothermal and other clean energy projects throughout the City and State of New York – and beyond.Planned construction for 1515 Surf Ave development

As the energy landscape continues to shift rapidly – with more widespread government support to decarbonize, whether by carrot (incentive programs) or by stick (penalties for carbon emissions), and with more commercial owners looking for ways to transform their properties into high-performance buildings, Ecosave is well positioned to play an integral role in decarbonizing the built environment.
