Associate Building AutomationService Technician

Location: Philadelphia, PA

Description

Role Overview

Ecosave designs, delivers, and supports energy and smart-building solutions that improve comfort, reliability, efficiency, and operating cost. Our Service team works alongside a 24/7 National Operations Center (NOC) to support commercial, healthcare, education, senior living, and industrial customers across a growing national portfolio. This development role is for someone building a career in building automation service. You will complete defined assignments with active support from experienced technicians, Service leadership, and the NOC, then take on more complex work as your judgment and platform capability grow. Success starts with disciplined learning, safe execution, complete documentation, and early escalation.

Core Responsibilities

Technical Service Delivery

  • Complete defined portions of planned, preventive-maintenance, time-and-material, and corrective service work remotely and onsite under an approved plan.
  • Inspect, test, calibrate, and replace common BAS field devices such as sensors, actuators, relays, transducers, power supplies, and low-voltage control components within training and authorization.
  • Connect to BAS front ends and controllers; gather alarms, trends, graphics, schedules, point values, controller status, and field measurements needed for diagnosis.
  • Assist with troubleshooting the interaction between controls and HVAC equipment, including air-handling units, rooftop units, boilers, pumps, terminal units, and exhaust systems.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, point checkout, backups, calibration, minor repairs, and basic commissioning using established procedures.
  • Make limited, authorized changes to schedules, setpoints, alarms, trends, graphics, and point configurations; support basic BACnet, Modbus, ARCNET, and IP-connectivity checks, but do not independently change control logic until formally qualified.

Customer Ownership, Documentation & Administration

  • Communicate with the customer upon arrival and before departure; promptly escalate scope changes, unsafe conditions, access issues, and technical uncertainty.
  • Complete service records, time entries, and expense reports accurately and on time, documenting the issue, work performed, result, and any remaining action.
  • Coordinate closely with the NOC, Service coordination, senior technicians, engineering, contractors, vendors, and customer representatives.

Safety, Security & Stewardship

  • Protect credentials, data, backups, tools, test equipment, parts, and the assigned vehicle; never bypass access controls.
  • Stop work when conditions are unsafe; participate in after-hours or on-call work only after Service leadership confirms readiness.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Up to two years of relevant experience in building automation, HVAC, electrical work, electronics, instrumentation, networking, facilities maintenance, or technical service; applicable technical education or manufacturer training may substitute for experience.
  • Basic understanding of commercial HVAC equipment, DDC control concepts, electrical fundamentals, and common field devices.
  • Ability to learn to read control drawings, mechanical plans, electrical schematics, sequences of operation, and technical product documentation.
  • Ability to use common hand tools and electronic test equipment safely within training and authorization.
  • Basic computer proficiency and willingness to learn BAS software, field-service systems, and IP-networking fundamentals.
  • Clear customer communication, reliable attendance, organized work habits, and the discipline to ask for help early.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet company vehicle-insurability requirements.
  • Ability to travel regionally, work occasional evenings or weekends as development progresses, and satisfy customer-site screening, safety, badging, and access requirements.

Preferred

  • Technical certificate or associate degree in HVAC, controls, electronics, electrical systems, networking, instrumentation, or a related discipline.
  • Hands-on exposure to Automated Logic WebCTRL, Niagara N4, Carrier, Johnson Controls, Siemens, Schneider Electric, Trane, Delta Controls, or another commercial BAS platform.
  • Experience with low-voltage controls, HVAC service, electrical troubleshooting, facilities maintenance, IT support, or technical customer service.
  • Exposure to BACnet, Modbus, Ethernet/IP networking, controller addressing, point checkout, or commissioning.
  • OSHA training, NFPA 70E awareness, EPA certification, or other relevant safety and technical credentials.

Performance & Development

What Success Looks Like

  • Completes assigned work safely and follows the approved technical plan.
  • Recognizes limits, escalates early, and applies feedback on the next assignment.
  • Produces accurate same-day service documentation and dependable customer handoffs.
  • Demonstrates growing independence with PM work, field devices, BAS navigation, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Earns readiness for standard service-call ownership and the on-call rotation through demonstrated capability, not time served.

Career Path

Progression to Level II is based on consistent proof that the technician can independently own standard service calls, make controlled BAS changes, diagnose common controls and HVAC interactions, communicate with customers, complete same-day records, and participate safely in on-call coverage. Time in role alone does not guarantee advancement.
